Signs of an eel restaurant

This house is a restaurant serving traditional Japanese eel specialities. Something like a fabric drape called ‘暖簾 Noren’ is hung over the entrance. I find out, from the year ‘天保六年 Tenpō 6’ written on this ‘Noren’, that this restaurant was founded in 1836.

(By the way, in the year 1836, Robert Schumann was quite young as between 25 and 26 years old. On that year, he composed Piano Sonata No. 3, op. 14 and Fantasy, op. 17.)

Getting back to the subject, the symbol on the lantern is a hiragana character ‘う u’ (pronounced as ɯ̟ᵝ). This is the ‘う u’ of ‘うなぎ Unagi’ (eel), and marks the restaurant as a traditional eel restaurant.
