The Tokyo Bunka Kaikan – Concert halls in Tokyo

The Tokyo Bunka Kaikan (東京文化会館), designed by Kunio Maekawa (前川國男), opened in 1961. This facility is a renowned work of contemporary architecture. More important, it marked a enormous achievement in the history of Japanese classical music performance since the 1960s. In the heart of Tokyo, there are several brilliant concert halls for orchestras, and the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan is a pioneer of them. In addition to being a hall, it also has a function as a theatre. Many historical opera and ballet performances have taken place here.
