Stanislav Bunin – Monday, 20 January 2025

Stanislav Bunin is one of the best known pianists in Japan.
(He has a home not only in Germany but also in Japan, as his wife is Japanese.)

But to my surprise, it’s little known in Japan that he is a descendant of the Neuhaus family.
(His grandfather, THE GREAT Heinrich Neuhaus, was a teacher of Lupu and Richter. Heinrich’s son (Bunin’s father) is also the great pianist Stanislav Neuhaus.)

This also means that Bunin is a member of the Pasternak family.
(His grandmother was remarried to Boris Pasternak.)

Bunin was unable to give concerts for a long time due to illness, but after medical treatment he recently returned to the stage. In Japan, NHK broadcast a documentary about his comeback, which became a very hot topic. He played Schumann, with love. I think the music said everything he wanted to say.

Here is an article about the history of the Blüthner piano owned by Stanislav Bunin, published on the website of the Asahi Shimbun magazine AERA in Japan in 2018. It was written by Bunin’s wife, Eiko Nakajima Bunin.B
