Good evening from Tokyo under the fourth time state of emergency.
Day 47.
Quite a busy day. A ton of business emails came to me. I couldn’t read and reply to them all. Anyway, it’s too hot in Tokyo to sit in a room and work. Even with air conditioner, this extraordinary heat is a huge pain. Warnings was issued again today for people not to go outside because the heatwave threatens death. Today, as well as yesterday, the temperature in the Kanto area, including Tokyo, recorded above body temperature. There are also warnings of a heatwave tomorrow that could be very dangerous.
I post a very cool and refreshing video to escape from this crazy heat. I filmed this back in the spring of 2019. This pond is in the Kyu-Shiba-Rikyu-Onshi-Teien (Kyu-Shibarikyu Garden), former Shibarikyu Imperial villa.
This Shibarikyu is located in the heart of Tokyo. The Garden was created 335 years ago, in 1686. I imagine that in those early days it must have looked very different to what it does now, of course. At that time it faced the sea. Nowadays it is surrounded by land which has been reclaimed. There used to be a daimyo’s mansion here. Daimyo is a very high ranking samurai. They were the powerful vassals of the Shogun (a sort of samurai King).
In the second half of the 19th century, this site became an Imperial villa. About 100 years ago, when the Emperor Showa, the grandfather of the current Emperor, was Crown Prince, the Imperial Household gave as an Imperial gift to the people of Tokyo this Imperial villa to celebrate his wedding. Since then this site has become a marvellous park for the public.
